The US corridor through Wisconsin has been the site of ongoing highway upgrading efforts over the past three decades or so. What was primarily a two-lane highway across the state in , US is now made up of several extended stretches of expressway- or freeway-grade highway. While two of the earlier upgrades to US occurred in the s, including a bypass of Waupun and a bypass of Beaver Dam, most of the improvements began in the s.

Since its original inception in as a short Madison-Fond du Lac route, US grew over its first decade with extensions to the northeast from Fond du Lac to Manitowoc and southwesterly via Dodgeville and Platteville toward Dubuque, Iowa and beyond.
